How to Align and Tension Your Treadmill Belt

If your treadmill belt has lose tension or alignment is not proper then it will cause to injury. So it needs to be aligning with proper steps. The thing you’ll need is Allen wrench and wrench.

The belt can fall out of alignment to the point of rubbing against the side causing shredding of the belt edges. The belt will appear to have slide to one side, either moving or not.

A simple check of belt let you know that whether the tension to be adjusted or not. Stop your treadmill and lift the belt with your hand if it lifted up to 3-4 inch then it has correct tension. An Allen wrench will fit your treadmill. Some adjustment bolts have a hexagonal head and some have wrench head. Always keep in mind that the belt should not be moving during tension adjustment. Over tightening the belt can cause excessive wear on the machine and its components.

Adjustment bolts can be found on the rear roller of machine. There are two types of adjustments. Look at the right side of the roller first. If the adjustment bolt has an Allen head then there will be two adjustment bolts. A hexagonal head means there will a single bolt adjustment.

Belt Alignment – Centering Two Bolt Adjustment:

  • First remove the safety key and unplug the power cable. Don’t over tighten the belt.
  • If belt slipped to left, turn the left adjustment bolt clockwise and right bolt counter-clockwise 1/4 turn each with Allen wrench. If belt slipped to right, turn the left adjustment bolt counter-clockwise and right bolt clockwise 1/4 turn each with Allen wrench.
  • Now run the treadmill for several minutes. Repeat this process until the belt is centered.

Belt Alignment – Centering Single Bolt Adjustment:

  • Remove safety key and unplug the power cable. Don’t over tighten the belt.
  • If the belt slipped to left, turn the left adjustment bolt clockwise 1/4 of a turn with the Allen wrench. If the belt slipped to right, turn the left adjustment bolt counter-clockwise1/4 of a turn with the Allen wrench.
  • Now run the treadmill for several minutes. Repeat this process until the belt is centered.

Belt Tension – Two Bolt Adjustment:

  • Remove safety key and unplug the power cord.
  • To tighten: Turn both adjustment bolts clockwise ¼ turn with the Allen wrench and to loosen the belt turn both bolts to anticlockwise ¼ turn with Allen wrench.
  • Run your treadmill for several minutes. Repeat this process until each sides of belt can be lifted 3-4 inches.

Belt Tension – Single Bolt Adjustment:

  • Remove safety key and unplug the power cord.
  • Place the wrench on the end of the tension nut and hold. Put a second wrench on the bolt head. To tighten: turn the bolt clockwise. To loosen: turn the bolt counter-clockwise.
  • Run your treadmill for several minutes. Repeat this process until each sides of belt can be lifted 3-4 inches.
